Why Your Dog Understands Mobility Better Than You

Every morning, I wake up to my puppy yawning...loudly.
If that doesn't work, he paws at the wall so I can hear his nails scraping the drywall.
Next comes the ear shake, which pretty much guarantees I'm not falling back asleep.
When I finally open my eyes, his face is right in front of mine and he's staring straight at me.
His name is Hank.
I love him to death, but some mornings I really just want five more minutes.
If you have pets, I'm guessing you know the feeling.
But here's where it gets interesting.
Every morning when I open our bedroom door to let Hank head downstairs, he takes a few steps off his dog bed and almost immediately drops into what looks exactly like a downward dog stretch.

And I started noticing something.
He never stays there very long.
Maybe two to five seconds.
Just long enough to open things up.
Then he moves.
No 30-second hold.
No forcing range.
No waiting around until something burns.
He stretches, moves through the position and he's off.
I started paying closer attention.
When I let him outside to run or play, same thing. Sometimes it's the downward dog.
Sometimes he reaches one back leg out behind him.
Brief stretch.
Movement.
Then go.
Nobody taught my dog how to stretch.
He's never taken a Mobility Recipe course.
He's definitely never been to yoga or Pilates.
And that's what sent me down the rabbit hole.
Nature Has Been Doing This a Lot Longer Than We Have
There's actually a name for this type of behavior.
Pandiculation.
Pandiculation is the instinctive stretching and contracting behavior commonly seen when humans and other animals transition from rest to activity, especially after sleeping.
You do it too.
Wake up after sleeping and reach your arms overhead.
Stretch your legs.
Extend your spine.
Yawn.
Move around before you really get going.
Dogs do it.
Cats do it.
Many other animals do it.
And I think that's worth paying attention to.
Because after being still, the instinctive response isn't necessarily to immediately start producing force.
We move first.
We stretch.
We open up.
We take joints and tissues through motion.
Then we go do something.
Now, I'm not claiming Hank has secretly solved exercise physiology.
But nature has had a few million years more experience with movement than the fitness industry has.
Maybe there's something there.
The Two-to-Five-Second Thing Really Caught My Attention
This was the part I couldn't stop watching.
Hank isn't hanging out in these positions.
He's moving into a range, spending a few seconds there, and moving on.
That looks a whole lot more like dynamic mobility than the traditional image most people have of "stretching."
And there is an important distinction.
Static stretching certainly has a place.
But if the objective is to prepare the body to move, dynamic stretching and mobility work can improve acute range of motion while generally maintaining or sometimes improving subsequent physical performance.
That's a very different goal than simply becoming more flexible.
Mobility is about accessing and controlling movement.
And when I watch Hank move after being still, that's exactly what catches my eye.
He isn't trying to become a more flexible dog.
He's moving his body before he uses it.
Mobility Is Bigger Than a Warm-Up
This is where I want fitness professionals to think bigger.
Dynamic mobility can absolutely be part of a great warm-up.
But reducing mobility training to "something you do before the real workout" completely misses the opportunity.
Mobility can be the training.
We can intentionally train ankles, hips, shoulders, the thoracic spine, neck, wrists and other joints through ranges of motion.
We can build control in those ranges.
We can improve the movement options available to the body.
We can combine mobility with stability, muscle activation and strength.
And we can create entire sessions around helping people regain and maintain how well their bodies move.
That's not five minutes of stretching.
That's training.
This is one of the places I believe the fitness industry still has a huge blind spot.
We've built entire businesses around strength.
Entire businesses around cardio.
Entire businesses around Pilates, yoga, cycling, HIIT and recovery.
Yet somehow mobility is still often shoved into the first five minutes of a workout.
Why?
If movement matters, then the ability to move should be something worth training.
Mobility Gives the Body Access
Think about almost anything we ask a client to do.
Squat.
Lunge.
Reach overhead.
Rotate.
Run.
Golf.
Play tennis.
Get down onto the floor.
Get back up.
Every one of those tasks requires access to movement.
That's why one of the phrases I keep coming back to is:
Strength gives us capacity. Cardio gives us endurance. Mobility gives us access.
Strength matters tremendously.
But if a joint doesn't have access to enough of the movement required by a task, the body has to figure out another strategy.
Maybe the person shortens the range.
Maybe they change position.
Maybe another area contributes more.
Sometimes those workarounds don't matter at all.
Sometimes they affect performance.
And sometimes, especially when movement demands, repetition, fatigue and load start stacking up, they may contribute to problems.
This is one reason mobility, strength, control and movement preparation can all play a role in reducing injury risk. Well-designed dynamic and neuromuscular movement-preparation programs have demonstrated reductions in sports injuries in multiple populations.
That doesn't mean mobility makes somebody injury-proof.
Nothing does.
But helping someone build more usable movement options, better control and enough physical capacity for the demands placed on their body seems like a pretty reasonable place to start.
Babies Give Us Another Clue
I've talked about this before with babies.
Watch how much movement access young children naturally have as they develop.

Squatting.
Rotating.
Crawling.
Reaching.
Getting onto and off the floor.
Moving their hips through positions many adults haven't visited in years.
Obviously, adults aren't just oversized babies, and developmental anatomy is different.
But there is still something fascinating about watching movement before decades of sitting, repetitive training, injuries, work demands and lifestyle start influencing it.
Babies remind us that movement access sits underneath a lot of what we eventually ask the body to do.
Animals give us another clue.
After rest, movement seems to come naturally.
Maybe mobility isn't some strange fitness invention we need to convince people to care about.
Maybe we've simply stopped paying attention to how much movement the body seems to want.
Modern Life Gives Us the Opposite
This is what makes the comparison so interesting.
Look at Hank's day.
Sleep.
Wake up.
Stretch.
Walk around.
Run.
Play.
Change positions constantly.
Now look at a typical adult.
Sleep.
Sit in the car.
Sit at work.
Look at a screen.
Drive home.
Sit some more.
Repeat tomorrow.
We have removed an enormous amount of movement variety from daily life.
Then we wonder why so many adults eventually feel stiff and limited.
Our environment isn't exactly encouraging joint movement.
That's one of the reasons I believe regaining and maintaining mobility is going to become a much bigger part of the future of fitness.
Not because everyone needs to become a gymnast.
Not because strength training isn't important.
And not because mobility solves every physical problem.
Because people want to keep using their bodies.
They want to golf.
Travel.
Train.
Play pickleball.
Hike.
Work in the yard.
Play with their kids.
Get off the floor.
Keep doing the things that make life fun.
All of those things require movement.
Maybe Your Dog Knows Something You Don't
I still laugh every time Hank gets up from his bed, stretches for a few seconds and takes off.
He doesn't know what mobility training is.
He doesn't know the difference between static and dynamic stretching.
He doesn't know what a joint capsule is.
And he certainly doesn't care about my master's degree.
He just moves.
Maybe that's the lesson.
Nature constantly reminds us that movement isn't something the body should only experience during a workout.
It is something the body seems built to do.
And maybe as fitness professionals, our job isn't only to make people stronger, fitter and more conditioned.
Maybe part of our job is helping people regain and maintain the movement they need to keep using those qualities.
Mobility isn't just preparation for movement.
Mobility is part of movement.
And sometimes your dog is a pretty good reminder of that.
